Those are very special stones indeed. Surprised it didn't go for more.
I was hoping it would not be quite so special. I was the runner-up bidder
Those stones have gotten attention here and other places in recent months.
The prices have been creeping up ever since.
They are the new Charnley Forest
Which was the new Coticule
Which was the new Escher
It takes two to bid it up though, otherwise it would have sold for less than 100 EUR.
I personally put in a bid higher than I would have normally since it appeared that the stone had never been used.
Wonder if I would have had buyer's remorse if I had won at that price. Very possible since that is a whole lotta money... Will never know for sure.
The thing that really makes it special is as the seller advertises it's only good for 6000 razors. You see it has a tiny microprocessor inside that counts the razors and after 6000 razors it simply won't allow you to use it anymore.
Noswad, I noticed you did win the seller's other stone. Not sure if congratulations are in order because to me it looks like a synthetic made in the colours of a Coticule. Let's hope I'm wrong :)
Be patient, prices will come down again as soon as the frenzy dies off, and people start looking at their credit card bills from the holidays. :dropjaw: (which should be any day now!)
I'd have guessed combo coticule with grime on it instead of synthetic. If noswad is indeed the winner may be he can confirm one or the other when he gets it.
That special stone is a thuringian right? I could have sworn somebody here has one, and posted pics.
It would have to be pretty special to spend that much money on it, considering I'm getting comfortable shaves from my $79 4k/8k.
Yes, that was me. Will let you all know if I done good or not. I was concerned about that too, but the uneven seam line between the sides made me take a gamble that it is a coti.

I bought a razor from this seller too. I have this Pradat-Brun coming too. 2,5cm = almost 1" :tu
Plus I can join the 14 club with this blade too.

thats an aluminum oxide stone the uneven line is from the two different grits being put together aluminum oxide and silicone carbide (fine/coarse)

Thats a nice looking razor and the box looks minty, what is the 14 club?
http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor.../65514-14.html It is a razor club here on SRP for razors that have a 14 stamped on the tang.
At the risk of being wrong .... shudder ..... I think it is a natural combo coticule too. Nice razor as well.
Martin103, Modine had one, and said he'd use it after the Escher...Sounds pretty darned special to me. I tried to follow the thread but then it got all off topic, talking about a bunch of different stones, with new pictures of different ones. Modine never said whether his initial impressions were accurate after testing. I'm in total agreement with you on everything I think, but could you elaborate a little on what's wrong with that price for that stone? Seemed fairly vanilla in comparison to the 500 dollar Escher that would come before it in a progression. Am I missing something?
Regarding that 'special stone' and price .... I've never owned one but I've seen them go for more than that one did. Nowadays they are bringing high dollars from what I've seen. I don't know how they compare with an escher. Sham had high praise for his and I think Mike and Mac both rated them highly as well. I've heard they are best used with oil IIRC.
With this specialized demand for good stone you might think that some group would form to evaluate them and place a grade on their quality. Interesting idea for someone.
With luck the owner will get the rock soon and try it out
then let us know.
I have a Naniwa "CHOSERA" 10,000 grit hone and natural or man
made a quality fine hone can cost more than a penny. The best
make a a difference but are not always big money.
Well i did read all the post about this special stone, i understand its place in the rotation, all i was saying is that i was surprised to see it go for so much since ive seen many go for a lot less i mean a lot less like 1/4 of the price of this one. Actually the same goes for the Escher you mentioned a great razor stone for sure, nothing rare about an Escher they cut so many, and so many with different names like Fox, Droescher, Boker, etc.... and now we even see Escher with a 4 digits price tag!!!
Im not a collector, maybe the fact that this stone was in its original box made the price go up,but if it wasnt for the last two bids
this stone would probably sold like the others ones ive seen i hope so, i would love to get my hands on one someday but definately
not at that price !!!!!!
Yeah I was grouchy when I paid 120 for the Norton set, so you know I won't ever have one of these. haha. I hadn't been watching them sell, so I didn't know they've been selling for cheaper. Thanks Martin.
